Rethinking Recycling: Delterra Invites Brazilian Cities to Apply
March 08, 2024

Delterra is launching a call for participation to cities across Brazil: welcoming applications for cities to benefit from the Rethinking Recycling program on their journey to becoming Circular Cities.

Brazil has great potential to advance material circularity. Despite robust legislation supporting a circular economy, challenges persist throughout the country with over two thousand active open-air dump sites and low recovery rates of recyclables (0% to 6%).

We are excited to unlock the immense potential for material circularity in Brazil, applying our system-level transformation approach to pave the way for a thriving recycling economy and healthier communities.

About Rethinking Recycling

Within the Rethinking Recycling program, Delterra works with cities and communities to build scalable, self-sustaining systems for waste management and recycling, keeping materials in the economy and out of the environment.

Delterra will work with selected municipalities to implement our 6 Dimensions framework to exponentially increase the amount of organic and recyclable waste recovered and put back into productive use.

Collaborating with our Strategic Partners, we are expanding our work into Brazil, adapting proven solutions from Argentina and Indonesia and tailoring them to the local context.

Who can participate

We are seeking five medium-sized cities from 200k to 700k inhabitants, with an option for one of the available spots to go to a consortium of cities of up to 1 million people. The program is available at no cost to cities.

The selection process will be done in partnership with ICLEI, a network of local and regional governments working to promote sustainable development.

The selection committee will take into consideration criteria such as the political commitment to circular waste management and the city’s current waste management system. The process will include both quantitative and qualitative analyses of the data provided, virtual meetings and site visits to verify the current state of the waste system. An FAQ with the most frequently asked questions and answers is available to support you.

How to apply

Are you ready to revolutionize the waste system in your city? Download and complete the registration form. We will consider all applications received by MAY 12th.

The selection process will take place throughout the year and the outcomes will be communicated by December. Join us on this mission to create more sustainable and healthier communities!

Launch event

Panelists from the Government of Brazil, Delterra and ICLEI discussed how cities around the world can step up to the challenge and prioritize their transition from a linear to a circular economy, and how your city can do it with Delterra’s framework. The conference is available on Youtube >>
