Delterra is thrilled to announce the launch of the Plastic IQ digital platform for upstream innovation in two new markets: Brazil and Indonesia. This launch comes as world leaders are preparing to convene at INC-2 in Paris this month to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution.
The problem of plastic pollution is ever growing with over 11 million metric tons ending up in the oceans every year – a figure expected to nearly triple by 2040. Approximately 36% of global plastic production is currently used for packaging purposes and other single-use consumer products. The consumer and retail sector is under growing pressure from regulators, customers and stakeholders alike to transition to more sustainable solutions, but companies are often faced with challenges when developing an effective strategy and implementation roadmap. Issues prevalent particularly in the Global South include low availability of quality data for decision-making, absence of effective methodologies for financial and environmental impact quantification, and the lack of end-to-end digital solutions for strategy development and execution.
Plastic IQ was initially built by Systemiq and launched by The Recycling Partnership in the U.S., and further developed for other markets by Delterra, Systemiq, The Recycling Partnership, with support from Walmart giving. Plastic IQ helps companies in their transition to more sustainable packaging. The suite of tools caters to the various needs of CPG and retail organizations, regardless of their circularity maturity. Taking a data-backed approach configured to the local context, the platform helps companies build awareness around sustainable packaging, define a plastic packaging baseline, estimate associated environmental and financial impacts, and develop an effective plastic reduction strategy.
The platform is now fully available in the US, Brazil, and Indonesia, and accessible in English, Portuguese and Bahasa Indonesia. Existing U.S.-based users of the Plastic IQ platform can continue using the tools via the global Plastic IQ website. In partnership with Systemiq and The Recycling Partnership, and with support from Walmart giving, Delterra plans to continue expanding the reach of the platform in the Global South, while developing new features based on user feedback and needs.
