Papua – Food Waste & Methane Reduction Pilot
April 15, 2026

Location: Indonesia

YEAR: 2025

Funder(s): WWF

Budget: USD $50k

Working in Jayapura and Merauke between May and December 2025, Delterra partnered with WWF and local partners (supported by the Global Methane Hub) to help cities identify scalable strategies to reduce methane emissions from food waste.

Delterra conducted detailed waste baselining across households, restaurants, hotels, and traditional markets, then designed targeted behavior change pilots addressing everyday drivers of food waste such as portioning, meal planning, storage, and seasonal surplus. While behavior change showed early promise, findings reinforced that lasting impact depends on reliable collection services, accessible organic waste processing, supportive policy, and long-term financing.

Insights from Papua are informing national discussions on food loss and waste and pathways for scale across Indonesia.
