Giving New Life to Low-value Plastics
October 15, 2024

Low-value plastics, such as single-use flexible packaging account for about 35% of plastic waste produced. But today, less than 1% are recycled.

We have a unique opportunity to mitigate the waste and climate crisis and accelerate the transition to a circular economy – an economy that reintegrates materials into productive use and reduces reliance on virgin resources.

In Argentina, 20-40% of plastics arriving at material recovery facilities (MRFs) are sent to landfills, exacerbating environmental, social and economic issues. These plastics are mostly ‘flexibles’ such as LDPE, PP, PS and multilaminate. While these materials can be recycled, the offtake market for them is minimal as recyclers and brands tend to prioritize higher value PCR materials like PET and HDPE.

To address this challenge, Delterra designed and delivered a series of strategic interventions across the value chain, including incentives, training and capacity building, infrastructure and enhancement, traceability and market development. Learn more in this short video.
