Denpasar Villages – Transforming Village Waste Systems
April 15, 2026

Location: Indonesia

YEAR: 2022-2022

Funder(s): PRAISE, WWF, AEPW, Afval Norge

Program Partners: Griya Luhu, EcoBali, AGET

Budget: USD $1.5M

Delterra partnered with the Denpasar Department of Environment and Hygiene and IPRO across six villages in Denpasar (Desa Kedas Sanur Kauh, Kesiman Kertalangu, Pemogan, Ubung Kaja, Pemecutan Kaja, and Tegal Kertha) to transform waste management and recycling systems.

The program drove an 80 percent household participation rate across the six villages, reached over 100,000 residents, delivered 350+ training sessions through in-person and digital channels, and contributed to a 60 percent increase in annual public funding allocated to waste management. Working across behavior change, source-separated collection, MRF optimization, market linkages, policy support and worker capacity building, the program concluded with a handover ceremony in July 2023 at Kesiman Kertalangu — marking the village’s successful independent operation and validating Delterra’s model of proving impact at one site before scaling to many.
