Delterra in Indonesia

Delterra is an environmental nonprofit that turns global circular economy ambitions into local action. Founded by McKinsey & Company and established as a local Yayasan Foundation in Indonesia, we have a track record of transforming waste systems in the Global South.

Impact in Bali

Over the past seven years in Bali, Delterra has: worked with 30+ villages to transform their waste management and recycling, reaching up to 80% recycling participation; enabled the operation and scaling of one of Indonesia’s largest organic waste facilities (25-30 tons/day); developed trusted advisory relationships with key Bali stakeholders, including the provincial environmental taskforce, regency governments, the local-level environmental office/body (DLHK), and village and customary/religious leaders (Desa Adat); and partnered with academia, NGOs and other local organizations across the value chain.

Impact by the Numbers

At Delterra, we measure our progress and ambition against our core success metric: environmental impact. These numbers highlight our ability and ambition to deliver system-wide change on large-scale environmental problems while improving people’s lives.

Our Partnerships in Bali

Our current partners for ongoing work in Bali include: Global Methane Hub, WWF and Delterra’s Global Strategic Partners (Amcor, Dow, Mars, P&G).

We are also in discussion with many other potential funders for the Bali-wide work including bilateral governments, corporates, philanthropic organizations and delivery partners.

Our previous work was made possible in collaboration with partners including Minderoo Foundation, WWF, Avfall Norge, IPRO, the Alliance to End Plastic Waste, McKinsey & Co., Walmart Foundation and others.

"[Yayasan Delterra]'s work on the ground has really inspired us to look at an integrated recycling solution for Bali that empowers the community to solve their waste management challenges. Not only does it impact the environment, the work also enables change for the waste workers and the ecosystem."
